Concreting cost per m² in Maitland and the Hunter

Six things that shift the number
- How big the pour is. A 14 m² path on its own carries the same truck, crew and day as a driveway three times the size, so it sits at the top of its rate. Two jobs on one day share the fixed cost.
- What it stands on. Floodplain alluvium in Maitland, Morpeth and Raymond Terrace wants a compacted base; a slope in Bolwarra Heights or Gillieston Heights wants benching or a retaining edge; Medowie sand wants an edge that is held in. Driveways on Hunter clay explains the first case.
- Whether the truck gets there. A chute is free. A pump or a barrow run is a line on the quote.
- The surface. Grey is cheapest, coloured is next, exposed aggregate is dearest, and within exposed the stone decides how much dearer.
- The kerb strip. Each council fixes what the crossing is built of, 125 mm in 32 MPa in Maitland City and 125 mm in N32 in Cessnock City, and charges its own application fee. The Section 138 guide has all three.
- What has to come out. Breaking out and carting an old slab adds about $35 per m² before the new one goes down.
When two quotes disagree
A gap of a third between two quotes for one driveway usually means the two concreters are describing two different slabs. The way to find out is to ask both for the thickness, the mesh, the concrete strength, what happens under the slab, where the joints go and what the kerb strip is built to, then set the answers beside the specification. What does concreting cost per m² around Maitland?

Why not one price?
Because the same 40 m² driveway costs more on a Bolwarra Heights slope than on a flat Rutherford block, more in charcoal exposed aggregate than in grey, more where a pump has to replace the chute, and more again where a failed slab comes out first. The range holds all of that; the site visit narrows it to one figure.
Are council fees included in the rates?
No. Each council charges its own fee with the driveway application: Maitland City Council publishes $435, Cessnock City Council lists an application fee, an assessment fee and an inspections fee in its schedule, and Port Stephens Council publishes $320. They are paid to council, not to the concreter, and the Section 138 guide lists them.
Is a concrete pump extra?
Where the truck cannot reach the pour by chute, a pump or a barrow run is needed and it is priced in the written quote after the site visit. Mention the side access when you enquire so the first conversation is accurate. Most Thornton and Rutherford yards take a mini excavator through the side gate; some older Maitland lanes do not.
