What a shed slab is made of

The finish is what you see on handover day. These are the steps that decide whether it is still flat in ten winters.

Pegged to the drawing
Corner pegs go in to the shed supplier's footprint, squared by the diagonals.

Strung
String lines set the edges and the finished level, with falls read off a level at the measure.

Cut and formed
The pad is cut to firm ground, filled and compacted where it needs building up, then boxed.

Steel on chairs
Mesh sits inside the slab, not on the dirt, with the edge beams and bolt positions set out.

Poured and finished
One pour, screeded to the strings, broomed, then saw cut so it cracks where it is told.

How much does concreting cost per m² in Maitland?

Who does the work?

Maitland Concrete Works is a referral service. Each enquiry goes to one independent concreter working the Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens council areas, who visits the block, measures, quotes in writing and does the work. The quote, the contract and any warranty on the work are between you and that concreter, and this site never carries out building work itself.

Do I need council approval for a driveway in Maitland, Cessnock or Port Stephens?

For the strip between your boundary and the kerb, yes, under Section 138 of the Roads Act. Maitland City Council takes an Application for Vehicle Access Crossing through MyCouncil or by email with a published fee of $435. Cessnock City Council takes it only through the NSW Planning Portal. Port Stephens Council uses its own online form with a $320 fee. A DA or CDC does not cover the crossing.

Why does the ground matter so much here?

Most of Maitland sits on Hunter River clay that swells after rain and shrinks in dry weather, which is why so many older driveways have lifted at the house and dropped at the kerb. A slab on clay needs a cut and compacted base, mesh on chairs and joints cut early. Medowie and Nelson Bay are sand, which wants a confined edge instead. The Hunter clay guide explains it.
